crash. we have not heard anything on the extent of injuries. there may still be some debris on the road in the area-- so use caution if you're in that area. a k9 dog injured in a standoff... is back at home this morning after undergoing life saving surgery. 8 year old "nicky" was stabbed at least a dozen times while trying to take down an armed suspect..during a 12 hour standoff near maryland parkway and twain on friday. the man who attacked nicky is now facing several charges. the "federal law enforcement animal protection act" states that anyone who purposely harms a police dog could face fines up to 1- thousand dollars and spend up to 10 years in prison. a gunman is still on the loose after a shooting outside an adult entertainment business. it happened early sunday morning at "deja vu adult

situation out there. once we do, we will be sure to bring it to you. you can always find updates as well on our website, fox5 vegas dot com. a suspected drunk driver kills a man in a hit-and- run crash. it happened friday night near spring mountain and decatur. police say a 69- year-old man was walking outside a marked crosswalk... when he was hit by a jeep liberty. he flew into the road from the impact. police say the driver 35-year-old peter mitchel left the scene... but came back about an hour later. he was booked for suspicion of d-u-i... and hit-and- run. a year long manhunt to find a local man's killer finally ends in california. the crime happened near boulder highway and tropicana on february 13-th of last year. police say dwayne lawson shot the victim several times in his doorway and took off. the arrest report says the victim and his wife were fighting... when a friend tried to intervene. the victim told the friend to get out of the house before he killed her. the report says the friend called

sister. investigators believe one of the girls shot the other, before killing herself. officials say the victims may have been in a relationship. hundreds of mourners filled a chicago church for the funeral of 6 family members found dead in their home earlier this month. the chicago tribune reports about 500 attendees were there to remember the victims ranging in age from 10 to 62 years old. police have said they believe the family was targeted and the killings were not a random act of violence. the victims' bodies will be flown to mexico. police have not named any suspects, the investigation is ongoing. pope francis is continuing his visit to mexico, today... the pope will visit with mexico's indigenous population during a visit to the state of chiapas. on sunday, pope francis delivered a hopeful message to 300-thousand people attending mass in a mexico city suburb. francis pleaded with mexicans to turn their own country into a land of opportunity. pope francis will

"noah's animal house" has received more than 14-hundred dollars in donations from the community so far. the organization gives shelter to pets of clients of the shade tree. a thousand pounds of dry food was stolen on saturday.... including a special diet food for an animal with special needs. "they took most expensive dog food we had, and i had it saved for pets that need it and i do have dog that needs that food." the shelter is in need of "natural balance limited ingredient diet lamb" and rice food. serving on the police force is not only risky for humans, but for dogs as well. fortunately better protection is on the way for the north las

fox5's shannon moore is live in studio with more on the new kevlar vests for dogs it all started with a couple of photos -- submitted by the department, to a contest intended to raise awareness for law enforcement needs .. canine officer boris and officer bobby were entered into the 'keeping k9s in kevlar's' facebook contest rules originally stated that the dogs featured in the top 5 most "liked" photos would win vests - but community donations helped to fund a sixth winner -- meaning all 12 contestants including both north las vegas k-9s will get vests.. both dogs have been with the department for several years, specialized in locating suspects and patroling the streets. and with recent news of a metro dog being attacked by an armed suspect, the awarded vests come at a perfect time. kevlar vests are bullet proof and stab proof -- they're designed to be light weight for certian high risk assesments. each vest costs

back to the news desk. those living at an apartment complex up north near simmons and lake mead are waking up to heavy police presence outside their door after a stabbing. officers were called to the area shortly before 5- 30 this morning. as you can see police have blocked off the entrance to the complex. they say 2 people were stabbed and they both are in stable condition at umc. a suspected drunk driver kills a man in a hit-and- run crash. it happened friday night near spring mountain and decatur. police say a 69- year-old man was walking outside a marked crosswalk... when he was hit by a jeep liberty. he flew into the road from the impact. police say the driver 35-year-old peter mitchel left the scene... but came back about an hour later.

d-u-i... and hit-and- run. a gunman is still on the run after shooting and killing a man who was inside a vehicle. it happened late friday night on cindy sue street -- near rancho and vegas. officers found the victim's body with several gunshot wounds. police say the man and suspect were in the car together before shots were fired. the suspect is 18 to 20 years old... has braids... and was seen wearing a red hoodie and tan shorts. one person was hurt during a home invasion in henderson. it happened saturday on west atlantic street -- near lake mead and water street. police say a man and woman broke into a home while 4 people were inside -- including children. the 32-year-old homeowner was shot and taken to sunrise hospital in critical condition. the children were not hurt. police are looking for 2 suspects in their late 20s or 30s. they say the home invasion does not appear to be random. anyone with information about either of these shootings should call police or crimestoppers

police are investigating allegations that a former new york governor attacked a woman. officials say the woman claims eliot spitzer choked her at new york's plaza hotel over the weekend. she said it happened in his hotel room, where 2 of them went after spending some time at the bar. the 25-year-old woman also told police she and spitzer were involved in a relationship. spitzer has yet to comment. a teacher in arizona lost her younger sister in a suspected murder-suicide at the school where she works. the high school was placed on lockdown after shots were fired on friday. police say two 15-year-old girls died in the incident. the teacher was in her classroom during the lockdown... and she had no idea one of the victims was her sister. investigators believe one of the girls shot the other, before killing herself. officials say the victims may have been in a relationship. hundreds of mourners filled a chicago church for the funeral of
